Treasure of an effaced woman - The Hs.24 Psalter from the University Library of Freiburg

SZ007862
FRENCH LANGUAGE

Collection "Thesis of research of the Ecole du Louvre"

Among the manuscripts attributed to the Cistercian abbey of Pairis in Alsace, the Freiburg Psalter stands out as a luxury manuscript probably owned by the Germanic nobility of the 13th century, but whose provenance remains mysterious, and whose attribution has been relatively little discussed.
Was the Freiburg Psalter really commissioned by Ermengarde of Baden, a powerful woman, faithful to Cistercian ideas and most likely to her Wolfe ancestry? Although she is a good candidate, nothing can assure it.
Developing this hypothesis allows us to sketch a portrait of the type of woman who owned it.
It so happens that the Fribourg Psalter corresponds in its content as well as in its form to the personal manuscripts of its time, which are placed between the home and the cloister. In essence, the Psalter is one of those sources that offer the possibility of working on the lives of the women, equally divided between the world and religious reclusion, who held them.
These sources also allow us to measure the importance that these women placed on the beauty and wealth of their most personal possessions. This memoir has the merit of making this work familiar, through an in-depth study.
