Happy motherhood - Gilbert Privat

RF005989
Hand patinated reproduction. Mold made from a print of the original work.

After a first apprenticeship in the workshop of his father who was wood-carver, Gilbert Privat went to school of Fine-Art in Toulouse then at the national School of the Fine-arts.

He wins a second price of Rome in 1921. Several official rewards punctuate his career and he took part in various international exhibitions between 1925 and 1939.

He is the subject of an unquestionable success, as testified by his abundant production, which may be explained by the official commissions he was honoured with, as well as those from renowned decorators who include his works in their sets.

The artist managed to create his style by marrying his solid traditional formation with his sensitivity. Its art is noble and of a moving simplicity. It is expressed largely through its harmonious and elegant interpretation of the female body. His young women with rangy bodies are most often naked or draped in an ancient way, and have a high chest, a long chest and slender limbs. The legs are often joined, which participates in the serene balance of the composition and of the expression. The full faces are delicate and often emphasised by plaited or braided hair.

His representations deliberately associate a mundane grace to an unpretentious sensuality.
