The first guides in the famous Nagel Travel Encyclopaedia collection, with its red and white hardback cover, appeared between the early 1950s and the 1970s. They are no longer published today.
At the time, the publisher Nagel aimed its publications at the "general humanist public", with titles of sober and elegant graphic design, and aimed at universalism: it was the first to publish a tourist guide dedicated to the Moon, the 175th opus of the collection, the only one to be illustrated.
This facsimile takes the title as it was published in the 1970s. It deals with the history of selenology (the scientific study of the moon) through the ages, the chronological evolution of knowledge about our natural satellite, from its historical origins to the present day, and the testimonies of ancient thinkers, scientists and enlightened amateurs from different eras.
Numerous illustrations (works, scientific sketches, engravings, photographs) allow us to discover the topography and surface of the Moon, and offer the reader a first incursion into the cosmos .
