Maintenance tips for castings

The GrandPalaisRmn molding workshop takes great care to ensure the quality of its reproductions.
Its collection, which began in 1794, is the result of impressions taken from the original works. Each of our reproductions bears the stamp of the GrandPalaisRmn, guaranteeing its provenance and the quality of its manufacture.
To preserve the beauty of your reproduction, certain precautions must be taken, as the surface of the casts is fragile.
How to clean a plaster cast?
Avoid rubbing, cleaning with water, solvents, or other products, as this may irreversibly alter the patina.
Scraping or stripping the surface will cause irreparable damage, as will applying substances such as wax, oil, or glue.
Limit handling the sculpture with bare hands as much as possible to avoid leaving marks or damaging the surface (sweat and scratches caused by a ring).
Do not expose the sculpture to direct heat or excessive light (especially moonlight or sunlight) for long periods of time. The color of the pigments in the patina can be altered by light, heat can cause the surface layer to blister and flake, and the resin can burn.
Handling defects
Upon receipt of your sculpture, please handle it with bare hands, without jewellery, to avoid marks/scratches and damage to the surface.
Clumsy handling of your sculptures can also damage or destroy them, and falls, abrasions, or scratches are risks to be taken into account. To avoid physical impact, choose locations where you have space to move around.
Negligence when moving or transporting your sculpture can also damage it. We recommend that you handle your sculptures with care, avoiding pushing them. It is best to lift them by grasping the solid parts and not the fragile parts such as the bases.
In addition to impacts and breakage, transport can also leave dirt on your sculptures. When handling them, we recommend that you always keep your hands clean. It is also recommended that you invest in cotton or latex gloves to make handling easier.
Daily maintenance
Dust is another factor that can damage your sculpture and must be taken into account. To remove dust, use soft materials. We recommend dusting your casting with a dry, soft cloth, a feather duster, or a soft-bristled brush. We recommend that you carry out regular maintenance on your sculpture for long-term care.
