Small lucky and protective objects, the amulets are very widespread under the period of Ancient Egypt. Taking the form of various symbols, or of certain divinities, they are found as well in the funeral ornaments as in those of the living. They are then for their bearers pledges of protection, fertility, power or rebirth.
The dung beetle is a symbol of rebirth for the dead; a stone beetle was often placed on the chest of mummies, engraved with a formula from the Book of the Dead.
The eye is reminiscent of the eye of Horus, a symbol of fullness and good health.
The famous Ankh Cross of Life is the ultimate symbol of immortality and eternity; it is found engraved on the walls of temples, tombs, or on statues, in the hand of the gods only, and it was relatively rare in the decoration of daily life.
