Published on the occasion of the exhibition Wild Souls. Symbolism in the Baltic States at the Musée d'Orsay from 10 April to 15 July 2018, inviting you to discover Baltic symbolism from the 1890s to the 1920s and 1930s.
European symbolism and the emancipation of consciousness that it conveys are inseparable in the Baltic countries from their independence, which occurred shortly after the end of the First World War.
Through the use of legend or folklore, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, beyond the influence of Munch, Gallen-Kallela, Gauguin or Van Gogh, have forged a language of their own, marked by the beauty of the landscapes of these countries between sea and forest. The discovery of these singular works forces us to take a new look at this major artistic movement at the turning point of the 19th and 20th centuries, symbolism.
