Enameling glass in the Renaissance - In the footsteps of glass artists between Italy and France - Exhibition catalogue

ES707858
Written in French.

Venetian glassmaking is a complex and sublime art, which experienced a revival in the second half of the 15th century. Because of its immense success, it was imitated by glass centres throughout Europe (Italy, Tyrol, Austria, Bohemia, the Netherlands) and over a vast chronological period (16th-18th centuries). Among the works that came out of these workshops, enamelled and gilded glass has held a particular fascination for art historians and collectors. Specialists agree that a certain number of pieces are copies or forgeries made in the 19th century to meet market demand...
Thanks to an unprecedented collaboration between the Louvre Museum, the National Renaissance Museum and the C2RMF, the study of these glasses, known as "Venetian style", has taken an interdisciplinary turn, combining the skills of various professionals (physical chemists, curators, restorers, historians, archaeologists, etc.).
This catalogue reports on this fascinating work and, through magnificent illustrations, offers us the opportunity to discover a little-known aspect of the decorative arts of the Renaissance.
