Pendant Scarab Gold plated
BP000018
Louvre Jewellery Collection
Egyptian Jewellery
This pendant is inspired by a ring the type of which was very widespread in Egypt from the Middle Empire (circa 2100-1600 B.C.) onwards.
The scarab beetle, a sacred creature, symbolized the daily rebirth of the sun. The flat side of the amulet often bore the name of a public servant, his titles, the name of the reigning monarch, and sometimes a protective phrase placing the person under the aegis of a god. Here, the flat side is decorated with a Hathoric emblem surrounded by vows for eternal youth.
