Born in 1842 in Ferrara, a town in the north of Italy, Boldini settles in Paris permanently from 1871 onwards where he quickly becomes a fashionable portraitist and one of the great eyewitnesses to the frenetic activity of the modern town with its streets, its cafés and its balls then at the peak of their development.
Here Boldini represents the Folies-Bergère, a music hall establishment and a high spot of Parisian nightlife - its standing gallery was then famous for its amorous encounters. The vigorous and dynamic brush strokes, the liveliness of the red, restore to the place a festive and free spirit, carrying off both diners and dancers in a brilliantly rendered composition.
