This Pencil paper is based on the work by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres "Napoleon I on the Imperial Throne" or "His Majesty the Emperor of the French on his Throne".
Napoleon Bonaparte became Emperor of the French by the senatus-consulte of 18 May 1804. The sumptuous coronation ceremony was organised a few months later, on 2 December 1804, at Notre-Dame de Paris. For the occasion, Napoleon donned several costumes, including the grand habillement worn at the coronation. The young painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) depicted him in this costume, which included a purple velvet coat strewn with gold bees, in 1806.
