If, since the nineteenth century, Nicolas Fouquet has been unanimously designated as a collector, there are few studies that have addressed his collection of works of art. The present book responds to this gap and endeavours to reconstitute the collection in one of its particular aspects: the paintings. Based on the analysis of sources and the cross-referencing of information, this work responds to the need to draw up an inventory distinguishing between evidence and suppositions, facts and interpretations, memory and history.

The analysis of the particular context of the acquisition of the paintings leads us not to isolate this ensemble as an autonomous entity but to study it in relation to the other components of the collection - sculptures, tapestries, historical and natural history curiosities and a library. This approach allows the author, Clara Terreaux, to highlight, in addition to the entanglement of the issues inherent in the acquisition of paintings, the complexity of Nicolas Fouquet's relationship with works of art, the terms "amateur" or "curious" proving insufficient to qualify the content of the relationship.
