Théophile Steinlen was of Swiss origin and obtained French citizenship in 1901. He settled in Montmartre around 1880 and he regularly frequented the famous cabaret Au Chat Noir.
He was a prolific artist with a variety of talents, working as a painter, aquafortist and illustrator for different magazines, such as Le Gil Blas, Mirliton and Le Chat Noir.
A painter with vigorous lines, he was sometimes the artist of the working class areas of Montmartre. He was also a sculptor.
This part of his work is less known, and yet it belongs to the same universe as his pictorial creations. His favourite subject is
always the cat, of every pedigree and in every posture.
The modelling of his sculpture concentrates less on the anatomical details of the animal than on capturing attitudes that are often inspired by pure imagination.
