Renaissance style bed, called "By Jeanne d'Albret" - Elements 16th - 19th centuries
This monumental bed was sent to Pau in 1842, at the time of the complete refurnishing of the castle. It was immediately intended for the so-called "Jeanne d'Albret" room, reconstituted within the historic apartments on the second floor. Very quickly the date of 1562 sculpted in the center of a frieze with palmettes, surmounted by a cartouche bearing a cow, led to the identification of this bed with that of the Queen of Navarre.
The sculptures of the sleeping warrior and the owl, obvious symbols of sleep and night, are subtle old re-uses.
