She was American, Jewish, homosexual and influential; He was Spanish, communist, immensely gifted but penniless. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) had a deep respect for their respective work. The woman of letters will never cease to defend, promote and collect the work of the cubist. The constituent elements of their literary and pictorial practice - analytical decomposition of the simple elements of everyday life, language and painting, seriality - form so many founding formal characteristics of the artistic avant-gardes of the twentieth century. Examining their complicity and inventiveness makes it possible to sketch a crossing of conceptual and performative approaches to art, poetry, music, dance and theatre through great figures, notably those of Rauschenberg and Warhol.
