From the source to the sea, this catalogue reveals the secrets of rivers, these aquatic giants that shape the andscape and interact with most human societies.
A river is not a simple ribbon of water: it is a complex geological entity with an underground and an atmospheric dimension, and it extends over vast areas.
The book follows an imaginary river from its source to its estuary and attempts to answer many questions: where do rivers come from?
Over the course of the pages, the reader discovers the wealth of aquatic mythologies and societal issues relating to both river resources and river-related risks. The geopolitical and ecological issues of major river systems are the subject of notes and are discussed in interviews with three members of the Initiative pour l'avenir des grands fleuves (IAGF) association, including the academician Erik Orsenna.
The catalogue, with its sophisticated design, reflects the fluidity of the rivers and gives pride of place to the images. In a generous format, it reproduces magnificent and astonishing landscapes, shows art objects from the four corners of the world, as well as old documents, plans and as many representations of rivers as of people and cultures.
The association Initiative pour l'avenir des grands fleuves (IAGF) and in particular its president, Erik Orsenna, are contributing their scientific expertise to the project.
