Between 1940 and 1945, approximately 100,000 works of art left France for Germany.
From September 1944 to December 1949, the Artistic Recovery Commission worked to find these works of art and precious objects, to obtain their return to France and to return them to their rightful owners.
61,000 works of art were recovered by the Allies and 45,000 were returned to their owners or rightful claimants. Those that were considered "non-returnable" or whose origin could not be established at the time were attributed to the Estate to be sold, with the exception of a certain number (for paintings, about a thousand) entrusted to the custody of French museums and registered on several provisional inventories according to their technique: "...The initials "NMR" (National Museums Recovery) often and improperly used to qualify the totality of the works of artistic recovery handed over to the museums in fact designate only those that were registered on the inventory of paintings.
At the request of the Direction des Musées de France, the histories of these "NMR" paintings have been studied and presented in this book.
