Josephine was a woman with an exceptional destiny. Daughter of a family of planters from Martinique, she was sent to Paris in 1779, at the age of sixteen, to marry Viscount Alexandre de Beauharnais. The latter was executed under the Terror in 1794. Josephine narrowly escaped the same fate. In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte, a young and already famous general, was seduced by her charm and married her.
Empress from 1804 to 1809, Josephine made the French court the most sumptuous in Europe. The best artists of her time created paintings and sculptures, precious objects and furniture, sumptuous dresses and jewelry for her. Passionate about music, gardens and roses, she transformed her estate of Malmaison into a showcase for her collections, which she never stopped enriching. Today a museum, Malmaison will forever keep the memory of the "incomparable Josephine".
