Lucas Cranach the Elder is one of the greatest German artists of the Renaissance, alongside Dürer, Holbein and Grünewald.
In its richness, his painted and engraved work reflects the tensions of his time.
A painter of altarpieces offering his services to great Catholic prelates, Cranach, a friend of Luther, conceived, at the time of the Reformation, a whole range of Protestant imagery designed to counteract excesses in devotion.
The variety of themes embraced by Cranach, portraits, biblical or mythological scenes, allegories with a moral purpose, testifies to a prodigious iconographic inventiveness.
But beyond the feminine types and erotic motifs tirelessly declined by the artist and his workshop, what seems to give this work its unity is a profound meditation on the power of images.
