To come and go in the painting like a walker in nature, this is the experience offered to the visitors of the Water Lilies. An intimately meditated sum of Monet's art and thought, the great mural ensemble of the Orangery was also an unprecedented undertaking: painting ceased to be presented as a spectacle, seen from a distance, to become a medium, which literally envelops the spectator.
To give "the illusion of an endless whole, of a wave without horizon and without shore", Monet invented a revolutionary treatment of space : without objective limits, confusing top and bottom, front and back, top and bottom, in the image of the formless, moving, unlimited reality, of which the sheet of water and its fragile finery are the accomplished figure.
