The "Grand Siècle" in France, the "Golden Age" in the Netherlands and Spain... the 17th century was a time of extraordinary artistic flowering in Europe.
Against a backdrop of religious controversy and almost continuous warfare in a reconfiguring continent, the period was marked by an unparalleled flowering of the arts and major achievements in architecture, painting, sculpture and decorative arts.
Heir to the Renaissance, fascinated by Antiquity and its remains, the European 17th century made the classical tradition its common language. It shaped new stylistic vocabularies, explored new subjects, developed a taste for works and collections and energised the commissioning of works, the art market and its new enthusiasts.
Thus, from large cities to small towns, from royal courts to modest interiors, from great creations to simple almanacs, art was omnipresent and fascinated a Europe in troubled times, making the "Grand Siècle" above all the century of the arts, the century of images.
