This bird - an eagle, buzzard or falcon - may have been the top of an emblem of a district or village chief.
Made of a hard reddish-brown wood, of the false mahogany variety, this refined sculpture has a distinctive appearance because of the engraving that covers the entire surface. This technique was used for many ceremonial objects, such as the handles of fly whisks, fans, handles of swords symbolising power, in the regions between Ghana and the land of the Baulé" in Côte d'Ivoire.
These objects were originally covered in gold laminated leaves, glued to the wood with "smoothed" egg white and then with blue limestone.
