Johnny Friedlaender was born on June 21, 1912 in Pless, Upper Silesia. From 1928 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau and made his first engravings.

Johnny Friedlaender was born on June 21, 1912 in Pless, Upper Silesia. From 1928 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau and made his first engravings.
In 1935 he fled from Nazism and took refuge in Czechoslovakia where he held his first solo exhibition of engravings.
Upon his return to Paris in 1945, Friedlaender held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie La Hune, where he subsequently exhibited every year. He engraved etchings and in 1949 opened an engraving studio, L'Ermitage.
From 1951 on, he held exhibitions in numerous museums in Europe, the United States and South America.
Naturalized French in 1952, he represented France at the 1958 Venice Biennale.
Work acquired by commission from the artist in 1953 and deposited in the Chalcographie du Louvre.
