Mesoamerica, land of olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs, Aztecs, land of conquest, Moctezuma and Cortes, is a little known or misunderstood universe.
To better understand this "new" world, the book synthesizes more than a century of research in Mesoamerican archaeology and art history. As an instrument of discovery and study, it allows us to glimpse the intellectual and sensitive universe of these ancient peoples, what temples, masks, figures, arts with enigmatic images that speak more to intelligence than to the senses, these "conceptual" arts where conformity with nature is only secondary, where religious, magic and politics are expressed in a complex symbolic vocabulary where death is omnipresent.
This reference and introductory book on Mesoamerican civilizations sheds light on aspects of pre-Columbian art hitherto reserved for specialists.
It includes analyses of works, such as Teotihuacan's turquoise mosaic mask, but also documents unpublished in Europe, such as El Opeño's terracotta figurines, as well as exceptional shots of archaeological sites.
Some maps and site plans, completed and updated by the authors, are only included in this book.
