This book presents the portrait of Georges Henri Rivière: his youth and education, his attraction to music, his friendships with intellectuals, artists, socialites and collectors, his work as assistant director at the Musée du Trocadéro and his role in preparing for the opening of the Musée de l'Homme and then as founder of the Musée des Arts et Traditions populaires in Paris. In all these activities, while he was also Director of the International Council of Museums from 1948 to 1964, Georges Henri Rivière was able to reconcile curiosity, scholarship, scientific rigour and fantasy. All these facets of a personality are revealed here.
Exhibition at the Mucem, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, Marseille, from 13 November 2018 to 4 March 2019.
