This watercolour depicting a roaring lion's head was acquired by the Louvre Museum for the posthumous sale of Delacroix's studio in 1864. The bold design of this composition is combined with an extremely intelligent analysis of the animal. It brilliantly illustrates one of Eugène Delacroix's favourite themes since his youth, the study of wild animals and animals, which will find its most complete expression in the many large hunting paintings executed between 1848 and 1861.
