On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Tintoretto (1519-1594), the Musée du Luxembourg celebrates one of the most fascinating painters of the Venetian Renaissance and honours his "early works".
The oldest one that we keep in our hands, The Adoration of the Magi, was made when he was not twenty years old. The important commissions of the early 1550s helped to propel him to the forefront: Original Sin for a brotherhood or The Princess, Saint George and Saint Louis for the headquarters of a Venetian administration, near the Rialto.
This is a decisive period to understand how this ambitious young man, steeped in Venetian tradition but open to the many innovations from the rest of Italy, is determined to renew painting in a cosmopolitan Venice.
Religious or profane painting, ceiling decoration or small painting quickly executed, portrait of a prominent personality or close friend, drawing or sketch... the works reflect the diversity of Tintoretto's work and his desire to strike the eye and the spirit with his audacity.
