The Isenheim Altarpiece, a masterpiece by Matthias Grünewald, was a real shock for the writer and art critic Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907).
In the novel "Là-bas", published in 1891, he describes how his hero, Durtal, is haunted by the Crucifixion from the Tauberbischofsheim altar, which was then in the Kassel Museum.
Nearly fifteen years later, in 1904, Huysmans visited the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar where he admired the Issenheim Altarpiece, a painting of unprecedented complexity, strength and chromatic richness.
He then devoted a superb text to it in his collection "Trois Primitifs", which contributed to the public's rediscovery of this medieval German artist whom Huysmans described as "the most hardened of the realists and idealists".
