This is the French language edition of the exhibition catalogue Collections mérovingiennes de Napoléon III provenant de la région de Compiègne .
Napoleon III was fascinated by Antiquity and had constituted in his Compiègne palace a considerable collection that was the result of the archaeological researches he had commissioned in that area. This study is devoted to the Merovingian part of the collection. This furniture is often called after the "Forêt de Compiègne" designation. For the Merovingian collections, this designation concerns the discoveries made in several necropolises in the Oise area.
The existence of several excavation notebooks by Jean-Baptiste Choron and watercolours by Victor Cauchemé (1845-1938) make it possible to re-identify these objects. The quantity and quality of the pieces of this collection, the renewal of the studies on Merovingian archaeology and the possibilities of comparison offered by the numerous recent regional excavations required an exhaustive catalogue, especially as the Compiègne, as a place where the Merovingian kings stayed, is of major historical interest for the study of Middle Age.
