This catalogue was published to the occasion of the exhibition Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) Between impressionism and expressionism shown at Musée d'Orsay in Paris until June 22nd 2008.
Between 1884 and 1887 Corinth stayed in Paris where he studied in Bouguereau's studio, and then in 1900 he went to live in Berlin where he became one of the most active members of the local Secession alongside Max Liebermann and Max Slevogt.
Corinth tackled almost every style: mythology, religion, portraits and self-portraits, genre scenes and landscapes. Drawings, engravings and illustrated books played a key role in disseminating the work of this artist, regarded as one of the forerunners of German Expressionism.
