This porcelain bowl is inspired by a detail from a dragon-decorated meiping vase (China, 14th century, Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368)-Porcelain. H. 33.6; W. 20.1 cm. Paris, Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts).
This vase was produced in China during the first half of the 14th century; at that time, China was ruled by the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), founded by Mongols who had come from the steppes in the wake of the conqueror Genghis Khan. Through their influence, the workshops in the city of Jingdezhen developed the blue-and-white porcelain that is now a symbol of Chinese culture. Cobalt ore, of remarkable quality here, was imported from Iran, which was also under Mongol rule during the same period.
The shape of this vase identifies it as having been used for alcohol. It originally had a lid, which is now missing. This is an exceptional piece, likely used in an official setting, most likely at the court, which had by then been established in Beijing.
The dragon, a central mythical creature in Chinese folklore, is considered auspicious and symbolizes the emperor in China. Depicted in the azure sky, chasing a flaming pearl, it brings rain-essential to the life and prosperity of the Empire.
