This mug features the sun emblem chosen by Louis XIV for the Carrousel in 1662.
For the Carrousel in 1662, Louis XIV chose the sun as his emblem. The sun is Apollo, god of peace and the arts; it is also the star that gives life to all things, that is regularity itself, that rises and sets. Like the god, Louis XIV, the warrior hero, brings peace; he protects the arts and is the dispenser of all graces. By the regularity of his work, by his public rising and setting, he marks the likeness, printed in stone. Everywhere, the decor of Versailles blends representations and attributes of the god (laurels, lyre, tripod) with royal portraits and emblems.
