A central figure in the artistic revival that characterized the early 20th century, Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) is one of the best-known and best-loved artists in Brazil. Blending indigenous, popular and modern imaginations, she created an original body of work that has left its mark on the Brazilian visual universe to this day. From the 1920s, moving between São Paulo and Paris, Tarsila do Amaral was an essential conduit between the avant-gardes of the two cultural capitals in full swing. Through her painting, she inspired the Pau-Brasil and Anthropophage movements, whose quest for an authentic and modern, multicultural and multiracial Brazil aimed to rebuild its relationship with the European "centers" of colonization. The militant dimension of his paintings from the 1930s and his ability to accompany, until the 1960s, the profound changes in his social and urban environment confirm the power of a work always anchored in its time, which continues to raise identity and societal questions that are still very current, in Brazil as in Europe.
