Nighthawks, New York Movie, Gas, House by the Railroad, Edward Hopper's images embody our American mythologies. Like the most memorable scenes in Hollywood cinema, we have come to believe in their truth, but never forget that they are cut from the cloth of dreams. Edward Hopper's art is rooted in the naturalism of the Ash Can School painters; it developed during the 1920s and 1930s in a context concerned with national identity, which closed the narrow trap of realism on him.
From his early paintings to his greatest works, from his commercial illustrations to his engravings, photos, archival documents, comparison charts, nearly 100 documents that demonstrate Hopper's absolute demand for his art, his need to give a new, intensified form to his dream of harmony.
