In Ancient Rome, this ring was originally a symbol of great honour reserved exclusively for patricians, senators and ambassadors. Later, it would be conferred upon individuals of lower rank and those with lesser qualifications, and even, under Augustus, awarded to ordinary soldiers: the period was destined to witness an inflation in luxury.
In the Roman Empire, the ring lost its status as a symbol of authority, becoming a mere sign of affluence. It could be worn on the fingers of either hand; sometimes, several rings were worn at the same time.
