In 1676, Denis Dodart, the King's physician and a member of the Académie des Sciences, began work on a faithful description of the "Recueil des plantes du Roy", also known as the "Histoire des plantes". Each plant is the subject of a life-size reproduction, and the most subtle aspects and characteristics, from the roots to the petals, are reproduced with great precision of drawing and astonishing virtuosity in the rendering of tones.
