The National Archives hold a register dated 1782 that belonged to Mme d'Ossun, Marie-Antoinette's lady-in-waiting, in which pieces of fabric are attached with brief handwritten notes. This document relating to the queen's wardrobe has been commented on, studied and reproduced many times. But the most interesting thing about this register is what it does not tell us. Those who leaf through it are immediately surprised and disappointed.
This exceptional work brings together the facsimile of the Gazette with reproductions of the fabric samples and notes by Geneviève d'Ossun, as well as a richly illustrated accompanying text by Ariane James-Sarazin and Régis Lapasin.
Reissued on the occasion of the exhibition "Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and the Revolution. La famille royale aux Tuileries (1789-1792)", from March 29th to November 6th 2023 at the National Archives, Paris.
