This print is part of the so-called 'Van Dyck Iconography'. We have little information about the genesis of this collection. The most we know is that after five years of travelling in Italy, Van Dyck returned to his homeland in 1626. It was between this date and 1632 that the painter had the idea of publishing a collection of prints representing the most important personalities of his time, engraved by the greatest Flemish and Dutch artists, including Van Dyck himself. The Chalcographie of the Louvre has 125 engraved plates, divided as follows: portraits engraved by Van Dyck, engraved portraits of artists, portraits of great scholars and others engraved after him.
