The Gustave Moreau National Museum, opened in 1903, is the studio collection of the painter Gustave Moreau (1826-1898). With nearly twenty thousand works, it has an incomparable graphic arts firm made up of more than thirteen thousand drawings by the artist.
One of its particularities is to show, even within the permanent collections, four thousand eight hundred and thirty drawings that are leafed through like a book and which have been chosen by the master himself. Towards the end of his life, Gustave Moreau worked, as he wrote, to "make the final choice of the best drawings".
This catalogue is intended to be a current point so that researchers, both French and foreign, can rigorously study the work of the man who stated in 1858: "My most insignificant sketches even concern me very much". This work makes it possible to rehabilitate the prolific and virtuoso draftsman, who is still unjustly unknown, that he was throughout his existence.
