Born in Paris, of Swiss origin, Gérard Vulliamy attended the André Lhote Academy, before joining the Abstraction-Création group, founded the previous year, in 1932. In 1933, at the age of 24, the Pierre Gallery gave him his first major solo exhibition.
In the 1970s, his paintings became populated with half-man, half-animal figures, with a return to primitive art, in a way echoing his works of 1933.
Although important retrospectives have taken place in France and abroad, this book is the first to present all the facets of his work thanks to a very rich iconography skilfully presented by the art historian Lydia Harambourg.
