It would be necessary to understand one day, and probably this day is near, what is missing above all in our big cities: places of silence, spacious and extensive, destined for meditation, provided with high and long galleries for the bad weather or the too ardent sun, where no rumor of cars or criers penetrates, and where a subtle phisical propriety would forbid even the priest to orate aloud: buildings and gardens which in their whole would express the sublimity of reflection and of life apart! The times are over when the Church had a monopoly on meditation, when the vita contemplativa was always first and foremost vita religiosa [...].
