In 1925 Soutine produced a series of paintings on the theme of the flayed ox, based on a painting in the Louvre: The Ox Carcass by Rembrandt. He chose this work not to copy it but to interpret it and, from there, to invent his own painting.
There is nothing morbid about the vision of this disembowelled ox, suspended by its hind legs and with its flesh torn apart: it is an evocation of the crucifixion that is served and exalted by the fusion of forms and colours.
