Mycenae, a city in the Peloponnese, gave its name to the civilisation that dominated the Aegean from the 16th to the 11th centuries BC; its emergence corresponds to the decline of the Minoan civilisation. Warriors, builders of imposing fortified citadels and impressive tombs, the Mycenaeans were also refined sculptors, ceramists and goldsmiths, and the Cretan influence and inspiration remain very present in their artistic creations.
The ceremonial weapons, funerary masks, vases, and numerous pieces of jewellery discovered during the excavations of tombs reveal the excellence of the work of the Mycenaean goldsmiths. This "spiral" earring is a fine example: the pure form of the spiral, the representation of infinity, the colour of the yellow gold, the patina, the slightly irregular hand-finishing.
