The precious refinement of the poses testifies to the influence of Flemish painting on French artists at the end of the 16th century and the importance of the aristocratic bathing culture, emblematic of Fontainebleau since the reign of Francis I.
This composition has often been copied, we know in particular a version preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon or a dressed version in the collections of the Société archéologique de Montpellier. Inevitably, this work is also reminiscent of the double portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and her sister the Duchess of Villars, kept in the Louvre Museum.
