The American painter, photographer and filmmaker Man Ray (1890-1976), whose real name was Emmanuel Rudzitsky (or Rudnitsky or Radnitzky), renewed, in the first half of the 20th century, fashion photography which until then had been strictly documentary.
Introduced to Dadaist and then Surrealist artists, Man Ray became a photographer for fashion designers Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, and also worked for women's magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue. The journal reveals a little-known aspect of this major artist's work, and highlights the constant back and forth between "art for art's sake" and commissioned productions.
The journal features a selection of the artist's finest vintage prints, from among the 160 presented, and will evoke the importance of magazines in his career while comparing them with models and fashion accessories of the time.
