This portait with the mysterious gaze and smile shows the wife of a Florentine silk merchant, Francesco del Giocondo, hence the name of the picture in French and Italian - La Joconde or La Gioconda -, which means "joyful" in Italian. The picture came into the french collections thanks to Francis I who had the artist, Leonardo da Vinci, broght to the court of France. Leonardo that Italian genius, was a painter as well as an engineer.
