The work and its artist

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788)

Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury and died in London on August 2, 1788. He was a British painter, engraver and draftsman, and one of Britain's most famous 18th century portrait and landscape artists. Contemporary and rival to Reynolds, Gainsborough was successful thanks to his portraits.
