Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is the most famous of the poster designers - a past master of line, movement and unconventional composition. He was a highly prolific painter and draughtsman, producing no fewer than 737 oil paintings, 275 watercolors, 369 lithographs and posters, and over 4700 drawings. He seemed gifted with boundless energy, overcoming pain and disability to throw himself into a madcap race through life that combined unbridled dissipation with a prodigious artistic output. Toulouse-Lautrec broke with the bourgeois painting tradition, finding inspiration in cabarets, theatres and the everyday surroundings of the prostitutes he frequented, and invented new kind of painting and poster art that was ahead of its time, paving the way for modern advertising.
