Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983) is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Whether it is a sign, a colour, Miró brings out a poetic universe populated by metamorphoses. Attracted by all forms of poetry, he sees in the dream the expression of deep impulses that he strives to transcribe into an artistic form, a happy juxtaposition between reality and unreality. The life of the artist, over seven decades, is recounted here in a catalogue of refined craftsmanship, published under the direction of Jean-Louis Prat, curator of the exhibition, director of the Maeght Foundation from 1969 to 2004, who was the artist's friend. More than 150 reproductions of paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures, as well as photographs, many of which are unpublished, reveal a technical and stylistic itinerary marked by incessant renewal (expressionist, retailer, surrealist, wild...). An anthology of prose texts written by the poets the artist rubbed shoulders with throughout his life, Louis Aragon, Tristan Tzara, Max Jacob, René Char, Jacques Dupin, accompanies this visual journey.
The catalogue thus (re)discovers the immense and varied creation of Joan Miró, a painter committed to all the important questions of the 20th century.
