At the heart of the Guimet Museum, a singular place surprises and seduces at the same time by its majestic presence. The historic library, located in the rotunda and watched over by hieratic caryatids, houses the first collection of works assembled by Emile Guimet even before the opening of his museum, which was devoted to the history of religions. Today, this place is the ideal setting to show some of the treasures that have constantly enriched the collection and which, for the duration of the exhibition, will leave the beneficial shadow of the reserves.
From the European books that formed the basis of oriental knowledge in Asia to the manuscripts printed on bark or engraved on ivory, these works in their many forms and media bear witness to the inventiveness displayed by the peoples of Asia to record their destinies in time.
By bringing together witnesses from many different horizons, this book finally makes it possible to follow one of the possible routes of the migration of texts, the basis of contacts between cultures.
Exhibition Asian characters - Treasures from the library at the Guimet museum from March 7th 2018 to May 28th 2018.
