Johnny Friedlaender was born on June 21, 1912 in Pless, Upper Silesia. From 1928 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau and made his first engravings. In 1935 he fled from Nazism and took refuge in Czechoslovakia where he held his first solo exhibition of engravings. Upon his return to Paris in 1945, Friedlaender held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie La Hune, where he subsequently exhibited every year.
